Nick Green recently bumped into Bob Steane, a Lockheed player
from 35/40 years ago.
The
Brakes 6-a-side team. Many faces are well known from
the "North Bank choir". Oh, and there's double-winner
Adam Knight, too (to the right of JJ, the goalie). Luckily,
as it turned out. NB: this is a thumbnail. Click for

Brakes fan Simon Saunders (Simesy) sent us this report on
a fun weekend in deepest South Wales.
"A group of us went down to the Merthyr Tydfil 6-a-side
this weekend and manged to finish as runners-up. The full details
are as follows:
Group of Death
All matches 15 mins no turnaround.
Leamington 0v0 Peacocks Distribution Centre (without
Knight) - a hard fought match against the eventual group
winners
Leamington 2v2 Gloucester City (Knight
2) - twice in front, and twice pegged back by sloppy defending.
MTFSTC 0v1 Leamington (Knight)
- very hard match with Knight grabbing the winner
Leamington finished second in the group with 5 points.
Semi-Final
15 minutes no turnaround. Golden goal extra time of 5 minutes.
Penalties.
Leamington 1v0 Strikers Bar Boys (aet
gg) (Knight) - a win against the best team in the tournament
in our opinion. The winner came under questionable circumstances.
A back-pass to JJ in goal led to an indirect free-kick in the "D".
This was successfully half-blocked for a corner. The referee
awarded a goal-kick which resulted in three passes and a brief
dribble before a thunderous shot into the top corner by
Adam Knight. Cue crowd invasion.
Final
10 minutes each way. Golden goal extra time of 5 minutes. Penalties.
Newport County 1v0 Leamington - undone
in the 18th minute by a sharp shot into the top corner past
a helpless JJ. The lads played fantastically well after last
year's second place finish in a group of 5.
All three goals that we conceded were well-struck with the
goalie not to blame. If only we could find a second goal-getter
we might be able to win that elusive Dragon trophy. Newport
retain the trophy.
Simesy
NB The average age of the Brakes squad was
around 34: Newport's was nearer 24!"
Thanks to Simesy for this report.
