1948 clash with Boldmere St Michael's
November 1948. Days
of post-war austerity, with many goods stil being rationed.
The NHS had just begun.
There was civil war in Palestine and Israel came into being.
The London Olympics took place at Wembley. But enough of all
that! By November, Brakes were lying third in the Central Amateur
League, only four points behind leaders Boldmere and with four
games in hand. (Don't forget, it was two points for a win).
Having already won 2-0 at the Windmill Ground, this was set
to be an exciting game.

For those fans aged below about 40 who might be puzzled at
those prices, Ground Admission of One shilling for adults is
5p, with boys (and presumably girls, although girls were not
a common sight at football grounds in 1948) at 2.5p.

In fact, in a 20-game season, Boldmere went on to finish second
behind Rugby Town, while Brakes were two points behind them
in third. More on the 1948-49 season in Pride in our past
Many thanks to Mike Talbot at Boldmere for this insight into
yesteryear.
