Alveston Put the Brakes on Unbeaten Run

Despite having more of the play, Leamington returned home with nothing to show for their endeavours. Two goals conceded and two players booked was not what the management or visiting fans had ordered.

The first clear-cut chance fell in the tenth minute when, following good play down the left wing by Josh Tolley, Neil Stacey shot over the bar. Against the run of play, Alveston took the lead in the thirtieth minute when a low shot from the left beat Neil Thornton into the bottom corner of the net.

Two minutes later, a cross from Paul Wilkinson on the right was headed over by Jimmy Claridge. An equaliser looked on the cards on the stroke of half time when Claridge went into the penalty area, only to be bundled off the ball. A clear-cut penalty decision to everyone watching, apart from the referee who ignored all the pleas from on and off the field.

More chances went begging in the second half before another shot through a crowded goalmouth gave the home side an unassailable 2-0 lead. As the scorer was practically standing on Neil Thornton's toes, there was a slight suspicion of off-side, but the referee again wasn't impressed.

One of those matches when nothing went our way. Still, we are back to Kenilworth next week for the visit of Bloxwich United in the Birmingham Saturday Youth Cup (being played on Wednesday just to confuse everyone).

Leamington: Thornton, Taylor, Pett (Kyriacou 80), Green, Scott, Mellings J [Capt.], Wilkinson, Webster, Claridge, Stacey, Tolley (Collen 68)
