| DAVENTRY TOWN 2 v LEAMINGTON 1 Friendly |
Fri 27 Jul 01 |
By Roger VincentBrakes on Top in Game of Missed ChancesBrakes were in no way disgraced against United Counties Division 1 Daventry, two divisions ahead. With an assorted team including triallists, academy and youth players with many first teamers missing, Brakes lost to a free kick and a shot through the keepers legs after going ahead. Neil Perry forced home an early goal for Brakes in 8 minutes who more than matched a scrappy Daventry side. Webb and Benson went close before Daventry drove a superb free kick past youth goalie Neil Thornton in the 27th. Until then Neil's goal had not been threatened though, shortly after, he pulled off a superb save in a rare Daventry attack. With Beefie on for the second half another Daventry breakaway saw a tame shot go through the goalie's legs. Brakes continued to press with Webb outstanding, chasing everything, running past defenders and distributing the ball to great effect as Brakes surged forward time after time. Benson Miyoba went close on several occasions, Louis Atkinson looked sharp and Billo provided touches of class though missing badly late in the game. With Brakes continuing to press and Daventry, the goalkeeper in particular, blatantly playing for time, the last 20 minutes looked certain to provide an equaliser if not a winner. It was not to be but Brakes can be well satisfied with another good workout against much higher opposition and a good test of the different options possible from such a large squad of talented players. |
